Signs

Semaphore Signs, not only in flying canvas, but we are also very happy to design and implement complete communication projects in- and outdoors. We offer innovative and effective signing solutions for cities and event areas. From temporary solutions primarily focused on events, to permanent signing orders for cities and / or buildings. We spur our creativity and combine it with our in-depth knowledge in the field of marketing communication and (sports) sponsorship. One of Semaphore’s partners has organised many largescale public events and knows from his own experience how to fulfill the need for clear and attractive communication of public and corporate events. We challenge you not to see the event-dressing as a final item in your budget, but as an opportunity to add value for your partners and sponsors. Of course we can make a tailor-made design proposal for your event based on an intake. However, we have also devised a number of standard solutions. These standard solutions have been developed with 3 principles:

  • Efficient: Practically applicable and competitively priced!
  • Effective: impactful communication!
  • Design: beautiful to see!

Flags

Since mankind started co-operating, Flags have been one of the purest and effective means of communication over long distances. Next to that flags are undisputed the most powerful symbols for autonomie, differentiation and pride. Your own flag, be it a traditional rectangular flag or a trendy curved beachflag, dynamically presents your identity and message outdoors.

At Semaphore we believe in the bond between a traditional product and authentic values, like respect for the medium’s identity and care for it’s material and the production quality. With that attitude, we gladly help you with advise on artwork, use of colours and durability.

Sustainability goes the distance…

Luckily, it’s a common statement nowadays: “We are a sustainable company!”, But it takes quite a lot to be truly sustainable, while being profitable and and able to grow as a company. In 2013 we, two highschoolfriends with entrepreneurial experience and a passion for flags, started Semaphore Signs in response to the loss of one of the oldest flag companies in the Netherlands, where we all had a history.

Without being fully aware of it, our business plan was basically sustainable: we just wanted to make beautiful and distinctive good flags. Intended for users who want their flying presentation to reflect the pride in their company or institution. We were specifically not in the business of producing as much as possible at the highest possible price. We did want to acquire a position as a small but fine flagmaker within the, quite tense, market of signing. advising and working along with the possibilities of our customers and going for the best result in that image. This basis and our network brought us to Copenhagen, where we won the tender in 2014 for the exclusive delivery of Blue Flag, one of the most impactful projects of the Foundation for Environmental Education.

Inspired by meetings with the national operators of these projects, we started looking for a way to make flags more sustainable. In 2017 we were the first flag makers to deliver flags on canvas made from recycled PET fiber. then, our great company has been supplying many more sustainable institutions and companies worldwide and we are doing our utmost to become more sustainable in other areas as well as our sustainable products and mindset. For example, we transfer an amount to the Global Forest Fund for each flag sold. We also keep the organization and our accommodation tailor-made and as efficient as possible. Finally, we use part of our margin for sponsoring various environmental education projects worldwide.

These are all small steps, but they attribute to the least we all can do, together: creating awareness. That’s exactly what our PETflags do, besides being the most sustainable option in signing. Are you ready to take that step with us for your company or institution? We’ld love to be your partner….

About us

Types of bunting

Semaphore offers a wide range of bunting for your flag, banner or showscreen. Many of our buntings are for outdoor use, but we also have the most suitable solution for every indoor screen application. In recent years we have specialized in sustainable bunting for our products; more durable bunting so flags last longer than average and bunting made from recycled PET material.

Three years ago we were the first in the world to use recycled PET material as a basis for our flags, banners and banners. In the meantime, we are no longer the only one, but by taking the lead in this innovation, Semaphore is preferred supplier for important international sustainability organizations. Our PETflag and & SIGN flags, for example, fly high in dozens of countries for the campaigns of Blue Flag, Ecoschools and Greenkey, all projects of Unesco partner FEE, the Foundation for Environmental Education. Other international organizations such as PADI (diving courses), Greenpeace and Sea Shepard have also opted for our canvas.

Not only the recycled raw material makes the Semaphore flags particularly durable; the technical specifications of the two premium qualities, PETflag and & SIGN, give the flags a considerably longer lifespan on average than any flag. That quality is confirmed by testimonials from the most flag-challenging places around the world. Below you will find some of our most used qualities, but we would like to hear it personally if you have a very specific wish! Please use the contactform in that case.

Semaphore is flying sustainable flags with PETflag!

From PET bottle to sustainable flag

Challenged by our Copenhagen-based partner, the environmental NGO F.E.E. (Foundation for Environmental Education), we’ve developed a flag-bunting that is entirely made of recycled PET material.  Not only is it the most sustainable bunting on the market, it’s also proven to be a long lasting bunting, even on the most challenging flag locations.

Semaphore is longtime prefered supplier and proud sponsor for the FEE projects. The Blue Flag program is by far the most visible project; it helps communities, municipalities, marina’s and recreational beaches to create environmental awareness, achieve the highest standards in organisation, cleanliness and accessability and educate their visitors on matters like flora, fauna and the specific qualities of the location. The award for obtaining a Blue Flag notification is a Blue Flag, and so our flags fly proudly over thousands of beaches and marina’s all over the world.

The next step was to produce flags that in itself would have a sustainable quality. In 2017 we launched PETflag and we printed the first batch of Blue Flags on the new material. Thanks to our partnership with FEE, Semaphore was able to test sustainable Blue Flags in the most challenging conditions all over the world. After two years of testing we can now proudly state that Semaphore PETflags are not only the most sustainable flags, but that the bunting quality is at least the same as the classic shiny knitted polyester and even better compared to the premium buntings like spun and &SIGN.

Pricewise PETflag is fractionally more expensive, but compared to the premium qualities the costs are relatively the same, because they last longer and thus need less replacement.

Recycleproces from PETbottle to PETFlag

Maybe you’ve asked yourself what happens with your empty PET bottles after you’ve returned them to the supermarket or put them in a collectioncontainer. Some bottles are washed out and reused as bottles, but the majority ends up being shredded and grinded to granulate. This is the raw material for several new items, such as small boxes for vegetables and fruit, containers for other food, but also fine fibres from which stuffings for sleeping bags and coats are made. The challenge in using those fibres to produce a thread from which flagbunting is woven or knitted, was the fact that you need a bright white thread to print flags in bunting. In 2017 we succeeded in finding such a thread and in June 2017 the first PETflags were printed.

Sustainable flags also wear and tear…

Despite the PETflags’ premium quality, eventually they will also deteriorate because of the wind and sunshine. Luckily for us flagmakers, no flying flag lasts forever. If you’re flag is too far gone to fly proudly, you can send us your worn & torn flags. We’ll use them as raw material for artists and craftsman that turn your old flags in new products, like bags, hammocks, pad sleeves or items made out of felt. This way your flags will live on in other shares and forms.
